My publications

Orchid books:-

I have, so far, written three orchid books - the first for NCCPG and to be published by them when their funds allow - it is a single genus book - "Paphiopedilum - the Asian tropical slipper orchids"

"Orchids for Beginners" - with some 250 of my photographs, and with advice which really starts with beginners and goes way beyond that ( how can I fill 25,000 words talking to people who have just one plant ? ) was first published in UK by Silverdale Books . The ISBN is 1-956058-31-X.; this has also been published in USA where it has additionally been printed and issued as a paper-back . It has also been published in Australia, and most recently translated into Greek ( which amazes me - orchid growers in Greece ! )

And finally ( so far ? - if you are a publisher, make me an offer ...! ) a shortened version recently published by Silverdale again - and on sale at least at Plants Plus and I have seen it at some book-shops - see picture below the "Pocket Guide to Orchids" .

I reckon the publishers have done pretty well out of it - I wish I could say the same......:-The pictures below show the original UK edition on the right, and the recent Greek version on the left. The "Pocket Guide" appears below. In the further picture you can see one of the double page spreads in the UK edition ) the same pictures and text in all - except of course the Greek version.

My books - orchids

My articles/features have been published in The Orchid Review:-

The first time was in Vol 75 ( There is one volume to a year - the 2006 volume is 114 - so probably 1967 ? ) Each volume consists (now) of 6 issues, back in 1967 it was 12 issues. There were 4 articles in that Volume, probably one every quarter.

And so on - in Vols 76,77,79-82, 84,91,92, 101, 102 , 104,109 and 110.

Unfortunately, for reasons explained elsewhere I do not have copies, but those interested will find them in Orchid Society libraries etc.

Other pieces have appeared in the journals of National Orchid Societies in South Africa, France, and UK .

Photography - picture below shows the jackets of four versions of the same book.

"The Handbook of Digital Photography" published in UK by Silverdale Books ISBN. 1-856058-36-0 ( for the paperback version) Some 50,000 words, with many illustrations ( my 'pics) - my target audience was the person who had a digital camera and knew little about photography - your average snapper . Maybe this person wanted to progress from say a compact - even an Instamatic -camera, but with no knowledge of photography . I assumed some computer literacy - I see toddlers being taught it in schools nowadays - so virtually anyone who wants to have a go just needs a little information to lead them in the right direction . This is what I tried to do in this book - show something of what is so easy and possible with this wonderful combination of digital photography and a PC/lap-top/mac/what-have you....

Apparently I have been successful ! The book has been reprinted, and then a second edition published. Also published in USA and sold by Barnes and Noble, where I am told it has been a best seller but I do not have details of the reprints etc. Recently it has started to be translated, and one of these versions is shown ( Turkish - would you believe ! ) .

The illustration above shows, clockwise from top left, the original UK edition ; the UK paper-back ( as sold - I understand - in Matalan and Tesco ): the Turkish edition ; and the 2nd edition hard-back USA version.

By the way, I DO NOT sell copies of any of my books, my contract with the publishers does not allow, and the few free copises I got went mostly to family - who "must have a copy of Dad's /Grandad's book " ...... If you want , and can't find, I suggest Amazon.
